Once you've selected what you want to remove, click continue, and you will be taken to a confirmation screen. So if you have a large number of installation files you want to remove but want to keep your downloads and email attachments, it's very easy to do. This allows you to fully customize and drill down into which junk files you do and don't want to delete. If a program is using a lot of RAM you could see this in the activity monitor, but having it in an easy to use interface with other utilities makes it a simpler task.
